The Park It Shelf.
Pause a project without losing it.
One shelf, with a clear bin for each project on hold. Here's what to pack in each bin, what to write on the note that gets you started again, and how to keep parked projects from turning into forgotten ones.
Pack the bin for the next step.
Everything the next session needs goes in together, so starting again doesn't begin with a search: the piece itself, only the tools it uses, enough materials for the next step, and the pattern or instructions.
Put the shelf somewhere you walk past every day, with each label facing out. No room for one? A rolling cart with clear drawers, clear pockets on the back of a door, shallow boxes under the bed, or one cube of a bookcase all work the same way.
Quilt
Write a note you can start from.
The note is what gets you going again. Keep it to three lines: where you stopped, the next step, and anything you need first.
Make the next step something you could start right away. “Cut the blue squares” works. “Work on the quilt” sends you back to figuring out where you were.
Stopped: third row sewn
Next: cut the blue squares
Need: a new 45mm rotary blade
Stopped: front pads replaced
Next: adjust the rear brake cable
Need: a 5mm hex key
Stopped: receipts sorted
Next: total the medical receipts
Need: last year's return
Pick one bin a week.
A parked project only stays parked if you look at it. Once a week, stand at the shelf and decide what each bin needs.
Pull one out.
Do the next step on its note this week. One bin is enough.
Keep the rest parked.
If something changed, update the note before the bin goes back.
Let one go.
If you don't want it anymore, pass the materials on and free up the slot.
When the shelf is full, finish a project or let one go before you start another.
Tell beckett where you stopped.
The bin keeps the pieces together. beckett keeps your place. Say where you stopped and what comes next, then ask when you're back at the shelf or standing in the fabric store.
Projects that don't fit in a bin, like a trip you started planning, can be parked the same way.
Parking the quilt for now. Third row is sewn, next is cutting the blue squares. I need a new 45mm blade for the rotary cutter first.
Got it. I saved where you stopped and added a 45mm rotary cutter blade to your shopping list.
November 14
Where was I with the quilt?
The third row is sewn. Next is cutting the blue squares. You wanted a new 45mm blade for the rotary cutter first, and it's still on your shopping list.
Start with the project you just parked.
